New app solves ski map confusion

6846593The riddle of navigating your way through a snow-covered ski resort where every sign and street name is blanketed by the white stuff has finally been solved by an innovative new mapping application.

Author Francis Johnston has painstakingly designed his own intricately detailed maps featuring everything from the location of shops, cafes and restaurants to individual ski routes and lifts all set on a snow-bound backdrop that overlays the original satellite image.

Johnston came up with the idea after realising that most interactive mapping services, such as Google Maps, use satellite images that are taken throughout the off-season when resorts bear little resemblance to the snow-draped landscapes that are usually enjoyed by skiers when they arrive.

“Many ski resorts tend to look a bit barren and unappealing in the off-season periods between their winter and summer seasons. Unfortunately, that appears to be the points in time when most published satellite images of them were recorded,” he said.

“That may make it easier for viewers to discern the roads and the rooftops, but I believe it’s better to be able to visualise ski resorts in a way that relates to the season when most people visit: indicating the routes of ski pistes plus the exact location of ski lifts, accommodation and après-ski venues, so that visitors can be better informed and best prepared to get the most out of their stay.”
