Working a ski season

SkiChaletIf you are looking for a job that will give you endless time on the slopes, let you hit the snow with your skiing equipment, and get paid for doing what you’d probably be doing anyway, you may be inclined to work a ski season.

The fact is that this is a seasonal job and resorts are always looking for employees when they are getting ready to open their doors. That being said there are lots of people that are seeking these jobs so it can seem a bit daunting; yet you will then delight in knowing that there is also a great number of applicants that don’t make it past the first week or two. That means if you have the know how and are willing to put in the time you can earn a spot at one of the many differing job options for working in and around a ski resort.

You will most likely want to call ahead or at least get things set up before you actually head to the resort because should you already get there not only will the pickings be slimmer from those who planned ahead, but if you don’t find a position you may then be stuck and out of luck. However don’t give up if you are already there and looking, be persistent and go in and talk to the people in charge and also know that there is such a thing as luck being on your side. Make it clear that you are willing to work in any position they may still have available and you could find yourself out on the piste in your skiing clothes also making a profit.

When it comes to what kind of positions you could be hired for there is being a chalet cook, a chalet rep, a chalet host, or an instructor just to name a few. When you go in to apply make sure you present your previous experiences as this will improve your chances; the more skills or past work you’ve already demonstrated is going to work to your advantage.

For a chef position you will want to have a menu plan mapped out to show and you should have the ability to make good food too! It helps if you’ve gone through a culinary course and that you are prepared to serve up fare to kids and also any people with specific dietary necessities.

You could also be sent out as a guide for other customers not only whilst with your skiing gear but also to local restaurants and attractions. You could further be helping to clear snow, move things around and set up, and also do airport runs.

There are plenty of customer service opportunities and you want to make sure you do have good skills there. Yet if you want to spend the most time on the slopes you may want to be an instructor.  To do this you would need to have passed a BASI certification course beforehand and have proof of that to show your employer. The amount of freedom to go hit the piste in your skiing clothes will depend on the type of job you land. Additionally the pay may not always be great but some positions may offer free room and board and generally come with a free lift pass and access to any ski equipment. So if you truly love the snow and all a ski resort entails, finding a job during the ski season could be right up your alley.
