Concerns have been raised over drink-skiing, after a study found around 23% of British skiers are still drunk from the night before when they hit the slopes in the morning.
According to the survey by More Than travel insurance, the winter sports enthusiasts ski or snowboard at almost double the legal drink-drive limit – with some seven units of alcohol still in their blood stream when they begin skiing.
And in this condition, the skiers will usually not come down to the four-unit mark until at least 11am, it is said.
However, as many as 74% of the 1,072 skiers and snowboarders polled think that alcohol consumption cannot be associated with poor performance on the slopes, with 45% planning to drink every night during a trip.
And about 31% were not aware that their insurance policy could be affected if they cause a serious accident due to heavy drinking the previous night.
More Than spokesman Pete Markey said: “The findings of the research are extremely concerning. Brits abroad have a reputation for drinking to excess but throw a high-speed downhill sport into the mix and you have a very nasty combination.
“Drink-driving is severely frowned upon and drink-skiing should be too. It can be just as dangerous.”
