CairnGorm Mountain Ski Centre Closed due to Snow!

CairnGormCairnGorm Mountain ski centre situated in the Highlands of ScotlandĀ is closed for the day today because there is just too much snow.

They have had a blizzard that has lasted two days and they have had to get in snow blowers and massive Caterpillar vehicles to attempt to clear the slopes and the road that leads to the CairnGorm Mountain ski centre. The operations manager at the CairnGorm ski centre said that the roads are blocked with 15ft snow drifts and that parts of the railway track that goes up the mountain has a good layer of snow. Some of their ski-tow towers are just sticking out of the snow.

The centre have spent two days trying to clear the snow, using a huge 17 tonne Caterpillar earth mover so that they can open to the public again. There is a single track road which leads up to the car park and they have had to get snow blowers up there to try and widen the roads so that two-way traffic can pass and the public can get up there once again.

Even though the CairnGorm Mountain have had this problem it has been their best Christmas holiday season in 14 years with over 8000 snowboarders and skiers using the runs over a four day period from Boxing Day.
