A ski resort in the French Alps is to reopen on Boxing Day following a two-year closure.

The Abondance resort was closed after the 2006/7 season with many resorts suffering from low snow levels. It  had been running at a loss prior to its closure.

Many people blamed the decline of the Alpine resort on the local mayor in office at the time, along with the town council.

In March 2008 a new mayor was voted in, and work got underway to improve its facilities.

When it opens again, visitors will be able to enjoy a range of winter activities including skiing, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing.

There is also a wide range of accommodation options and activities in the village itself.

Abondance has nine ski lifts and 14 slopes of its own. It is also close to Portes du Soleil, a 650km ski area.
