Highland skiing resort a success

Snow SkiingA winter sports centre in the Highlands has revealed that 2009 has been its best Christmas holiday season in 14 years.

CairnGorm Mountain said over a four-day period following Christmas Day it has had more than 8,000 skiers and snowboarders using its runs, the best turnout since 1995.

The resort in the Cairngorms near Aviemore said forecast blizzard conditions are expected to be followed by sunshine on New Year’s Day, while further snowfall is expected over the weekend.

Back in 2007, Scottish ski resorts admitted they were suffering one of their worst seasons in years. A lack of snow and increasing high winds were blamed for keeping skiers and snowboarders off the slopes.

Meanwhile, bosses of the Glencoe Mountain Resort have been working with government agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise in drawing up plans for a new and improved resort..

Headed by businessman Andy Meldrum, the group plans to develop the Scotland’s oldest ski resort into an all-year venue through the creation of mountain bike trails.
