Drinking skiers risk accident costs

Snow SkiingAround 1.3 million Britons will hit the European ski resorts this coming season, with experts predicting excellent snow falls.

Skiers should happily make the most of it, but stay mindful about the dangers of drinking and skiing, says Steve Williams, head of travel insurance at Confused.com.

He said: “All travel insurance contracts have an exclusion regarding claims made as a result of alcohol consumption. Providers are fully within their rights to decline claims involving alcohol.”

In a study carried out by the website, almost a quarter of skiers quizzed said they had skied down a mountain after drinking more than four units of alcohol, and 35 per cent of men interviewed said they regularly drink and ski.

The most likely group to ’slurp and ski’ is men aged 31-35.

Worryingly, 41 per cent of this sector think they are covered by their insurance in the event of any accident, even if it happens due to drinking alcohol.

One of the UK’s largest insurance providers Aviva recently paid out a claim concerning a traveller who paralysed his legs in a snow-boarding accident. The man had to be air-lifted off the mountain and brought home by air ambulance.

In this incident, alcohol or drugs was not a factor – but it had been he would have had to have found the £12,000 costs himself.
